Ford, Fiat to produce small cars together

Friday, September 9, 2005

Italian-based Fiat Auto SPA and US-based Ford Motor Co. announced they signed an agreement to cooperate in designing two small car models. This came only seven months after General Motors severed their relationship with Fiat.

Both companies plan to work together on a new version of the popular Fiat Cinquecento and on a replacement for the Ford Ka, both to be based on the Fiat Panda platform.

The cooperation can help reduce the companies’ small car production costs and ease financial difficulties they are facing. Ford is struggling with high labor and health care costs, while Fiat suffers from its unprofitable Italian plants.

After the deal was announced, shares of Fiat rose $0.06 to $9.44, while Ford gained $0.06 to $9.95 on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

How To Give Perfect Massage

By Marion Mccants

What differentiates a regular massage from a perfect one? The answer is on the details of the massage that you are going to provide.

The first and one of the most important features that you need to look at will be the setup. This will be the place where the massage will take place. The things that you are going to take care of will include the room temperature, lighting, privacy, noise, and the scent.

If you are living in a place where the weather can get really cold, the room’s temperature is always a big issue when giving a massage. You will need to have heaters and thermometers in order to monitor and keep the room as warm as possible. You might not need a lot of light. A couple of lamps with shades may be great as they will leave you with enough light to still see which body parts you are massaging. At the same time, these lights will be a little more dimmed compared to overhead light fixtures.

The bedroom or a massage room specifically made for this purpose can be a good venue. These rooms will offer the best amounts of privacy. Closing the doors can help reduce the amount of unnecessary noise getting into the room.

Before you get to the real massage techniques, a warm up is necessary so that the body will not be abruptly shook up by the massage. If you are the one giving the massage, you need to start with light strokes. The deeper and harder strokes should be reserved for the middle part of the session. The warm up can be done with the use of your fingers. You run your fingers lightly over the area that you are planning to massage. For back massage, most therapists start at the back. Then, they will massage lightly towards the shoulder to make the back become a little less tense.

The preliminaries of a massage will likewise include prepping your client about the amount of time that the session will take. Most of these people who get massages are most probably busy with the lives and can only have a specific amount of time allotted for the massage. And so if you say that the massage will be completed in an hour, you need to complete it in an hour or a little bit sooner.

After the warm up, it will be time for the massage. For this, the therapist will make use of harder strokes. The palms of the hands are also used for most techniques. Depending on the type of massage that you are getting, this part can take the longest to complete.

Once the main part is completed, a warm down method is still implemented. Much like in doing exercise, you need to slowly make the body revert back to its previous state. The muscles need to be relaxed with the least amount of pressure placed on them. A little rubbing on the area that was massaged might be enough as a warm down technique.

Study raises health concerns about shower curtains

Monday, June 16, 2008

The Canadian Environmental Law Assocation and the Canadian organization Environmental Defence jointly conducted a study that was released to the public on Thursday, saying that chemicals released by new vinyl curtains may pose a significant health risk.

The study noted that many shower curtains contain more than 100 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), phthalates and organotins, some of which may be released into the air when first taken from a package. These chemicals, responsible for the characteristic smell of new vinyl, may cause damage to kidneys, the liver and the central nervous systems, respiratory problems, nausea, headaches and loss off coordination, according to the report.

These vinyl curtains are also said to contain traces of metals like lead, cadmium and mercury.

Jennifer Foulds of Environmental Defence advises consumers to seek alternatives to new vinyl products such as shower curtains and table cloths. Older products are thought to be safe, as they have already released most of the allegedly dangerous chemicals.

Critics of the study have called it “fear-mongering”, and some health professionals agree that the risk is being overblown. Warren Foster, a professor in the obstetrics and gynecology department at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario points out that, “the difference between hazard and risk is great, and without knowing the actual human exposure, it’s premature to make any judgement.”

Foster further commented that the study was not performed in a rigorous manner by not having controls or random sampling.

Five brands of shower curtain were examined in the study; they were purchased from American stores including Bed Bath & Beyond, Kmart, Sears, Target and Wal-Mart. Curtains of the same brand are also available in major Canadian stores.

Marion Axmith, director general of the Vinyl Council of Canada calls the report a “blatant attempt to manipulate consumers and retailers into thinking shower curtains pose a danger, and they don’t.” She noted that, “as far as we know, nobody’s ever been harmed by a shower curtain.”

Vinyl has long been a point of dispute between environmentalists and those in the chemical industry. A chemical used to make vinyl is known to be a risk for liver and other cancers for chemical plant workers, and the phthalates in vinyl products have been linked to interference with normal male hormone production.

Australian Senator arrives at Parliament dressed as a beer bottle

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Family First Senator Steve Fielding arrived at Parliament today, dressed as a beer bottle to raise awareness of a bill he intends to move in the Senate today. Senator Fielding will introduce a bill to establish a nationwide refund scheme for bottles and cans.

A similar scheme has operated in South Australia since 1977.

Family First wants a rebate of 10 cents per container, while the Australian Greens want 20 cents.

Speaking to reporters outside parliament dressed as a beer bottle, the Senator said the legislation would reduce litter by 25 per cent. “There’s a message in this bottle.”

“I am no longer trash, I’m cash.”

“We should get the litter off the streets and off the creeks and into recycling – that’s good for the environment and good for the community”

“It’s a win-win and I can’t understand why nationally we don’t have a scheme,” said Senator Fielding.

Senator Fielding said that recycling not only reduced litter, but also consumes less energy than making new containers from scratch. “Recycling a plastic bottle saves more than 80 per cent of the energy used to make a bottle from scratch and recycling aluminium cans uses just five per cent of the energy used making a can from scratch,” said the Senator.

Senator Bob Brown, leader of the Greens said while there were environmental benefits from recycling, it would also create thousands of new jobs.

“This is a very good way of recycling and reducing energy because a lot of energy goes into making cans and bottles,” Senator Brown told reporters.

“It will employ tens of thousands of people across Australia.”

Approaches To Strategic Human Resources Management A Study By Artur Victoria

By Artur Victoria

A Human Resources Executive as a member of top management must determine what policies, programs, practices, and approaches will contribute most to the realization of the organization objectives. This means that in his new role he must be responsible for initiating and implementing-at all levels of management-the most effective utilization of the human assets.

The primary function of the human resources position is to make a major contribution to the development and realization of the organization short-term and long-range objectives while enabling each employee to develop to the fullest extent of his potential. This requires a catalyst and business effectiveness consultant as contrasted with the traditional role of the personnel director.

With these thoughts in mind, the position of the vice-president-human resources might be defined in this way. He reports to the president. His broad function is to formulate, recommend, and implement policies, procedures, and plans to assure the most effective planning, recruitment, selection, utilization, motivation, development, and compensation of the organization human resources; contribute to the development and achievement of the organization long-range and short-term objectives by initiating and implementing employee relations practices which will enable and encourage each employee to realize his personal goals while maximizing his contribution to business effectiveness; provide for the resolution of management problems and the realization of opportunities through innovative approaches to human resources management.

The principal responsibilities of the human resources executive are these:

— Formulate and recommend human resource objectives for inclusion in the organization overall objectives.

— Identify the potential contribution of good human resource management to organizational objectives.

— Identify management problems that can be resolved and opportunities that can be realized through improved effectiveness in human resource management.

— Formulate, recommend, and implement employee relations policies designed to improve individual productivity, job satisfaction, and profitability.

— Make managers aware of their full responsibilities in the management of the human resources entrusted to them.

— Provide the necessary tools, techniques, and methods which foster the development of a business climate conducive to employee innovation and development.

— Establish the necessary procedures and practices for human resource planning, recruitment, selection, utilization, motivation, development, and compensation. Insure that these are incorporated into every manager job performance evaluation.

— Develop and staff the employee relations function to make provision for innovative approaches to labor and union relations, personnel practices and services, training and development, communication, community relations, benefit plan development and administration, and problem solving.

— Serve as a catalyst and business effectiveness consultant in initiating and implementing new approaches to human resources management.

This position can exert a tremendous influence on business results. Therefore, a few words need to be said about each principal responsibility.

Just as important as market position, technological leadership, return on investment, and profitability are organization human resources. Thus its objectives must reflect this hierarchy of importance.

Human resource objectives for any firm might include five points:

(1) Provide stable employment, equitable compensation, desirable working conditions, and opportunities for advancement for employees in return for their skill, care, efforts, dependability, and teamwork.

(2) Provide a climate conducive to the development of each employee potential in accord with his needs, interests, desires, abilities, and willingness to take on additional responsibility to realize his personal and professional career objectives.

(3). Manage the human resources to assure continuing vitality and growth of the company while realizing a profit and providing opportunities for public service.

(4) Provide a sound organization with enlightened leadership to assure maximum work satisfactions for each employee in a decentralized environment.

(5) Define clearly for each individual the responsibilities of his position, along with the commensurate authority that will enable him to make his best contribution to overall organization goals.

Every organization, regardless of its size, must provide for the needs, interests, and desires of its employees within the work environment if it is to earn loyalty, dedication, involvement, and commitment. This is necessary in order to compete effectively for superior talent in the marketplace. Just making these objectives known would serve to attract the kind of employees all organizations want to have. It is, of course, necessary to follow-up with good management of human resources, or high turnover will inevitably result.

To shed some light on the importance of human resource management, it is a good exercise to look at the objectives of a profit-oriented enterprise-a single-product company, in this instance and attempt to identify the potential contribution of effective management of our human assets. The objectives are:

— To obtain and hold 41 percent of the total available market.

— To return 25 percent on invested capital.

— To return 12 percent on sales.

— To be the technological leader in new product innovation.

— To be the leader in introducing new manufacturing processes, methods, and technology.

— To provide a reliable, dependable, safe product at quality levels superior to those of the competition.

— To build public confidence in the company product and services.

— To attract and retain investor capital by providing a favorable return to share-owners.

— To increase the value of the company stock.

— To cooperate with and provide a fair profit to our suppliers, distributors, retailers, and contractors.

— To be a good corporate citizen by discharging our social, civic, and economic responsibilities through commitment of funds and managerial talent.

That superior, dedicated people are needed at all levels of the organization to achieve these objectives is evident. The company seeks to maintain a superior position in markets, technology, product, service, quality, and internal and external relationships. In order to do this, all six concerns of top management in obtaining, utilizing, motivating, developing, compensating, and retaining good people must be satisfied. These should be incorporated into the objectives listed above.

Alan Turing Building opens at University of Manchester

Tuesday, July 31, 2007

The School of Mathematics, University of Manchester finished moving in to its new building Monday. The building is named after one of its most widely known academics, Alan Turing, one of the founders of computer science and a Reader in Mathematics at Manchester.

Although Turing is one of the city and university’s most famous sons, there are very few things named in his honour. The city council was criticised for naming an uninspiring piece of by-pass Alan Turing Way, and a statue erected by public subscription bears a plaque pointing out the failure of the computing industry to contribute.

The new building deliberately attempts to provide a conducive atmosphere for mathematical collaboration with a design that aims to promote chance encounter in public spaces. It also aims to save energy with solar panels fitted to the roof.

The building also houses the Astronomy and Astrophysics Group, and the Photon Sciences Institute.

Sweden’s Crown Princess marries long-time boyfriend

Monday, June 21, 2010

Sweden’s first royal wedding since 1976 took place Saturday when Crown Princess Victoria, 32, married her long-time boyfriend and former personal trainer, Daniel Westling, 36. The ceremony took place at Stockholm Cathedral.

Over 1,200 guests, including many rulers, politicians, royals and other dignitaries from across the world, attended the wedding, which cost an estimated 20 million Swedish kronor. Victoria wore a wedding dress with five-metre long train designed by Pär Engsheden. She wore the same crown that her mother, Queen Silvia, wore on her wedding day 34 years previously, also on June 19. Victoria’s father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, walked Victoria down the aisle, which was deemed untraditional by many. In Sweden, the bride and groom usually walk down the aisle together, emphasising the country’s views on equality. Victoria met with Daniel half-way to the altar, where they exchanged brief kisses, and, to the sounds of the wedding march, made their way to the the silver altar. She was followed by ten bridesmaids. The couple both had tears in their eyes as they said their vows, and apart from fumbling when they exchanged rings, the ceremony went smoothly.

Following the ceremony, the couple headed a fast-paced procession through central Stockholm on a horse-drawn carriage, flanked by police and security. Up to 500,000 people are thought to have lined the streets. They then boarded the Vasaorden, the same royal barge Victoria’s parents used in their wedding, and traveled through Stockholm’s waters, accompanied by flyover of 18 fighter jets near the end of the procession. A wedding banquet followed in the in the Hall of State of the Royal Palace.

Controversy has surrounded the engagement and wedding between the Crown Princess and Westling, a “commoner”. Victoria met Westling as she was recovering from bulemia in 2002. He owned a chain of gymnasiums and was brought in to help bring Victoria back to full health. Westling was raised in a middle-class family in Ockelbo, in central Sweden. His father managed a social services centre, and his mother worked in a post office. When the relationship was made public, Westling was mocked as an outsider and the king was reportedly horrified at the thought of his daughter marrying a “commoner”, even though he did so when he married Silvia. Last year, Westling underwent transplant surgery for a congenital kidney disorder. The Swedish public have been assured that he will be able to have children and that his illness will not be passed on to his offspring.

Westling underwent years of training to prepare for his new role in the royal family, including lessons in etiquette, elocution, and multi-lingual small talk; and a makeover that saw his hair being cropped short, and his plain-looking glasses and clothes being replaced by designer-wear.

Upon marrying the Crown Princess, Westling took his wife’s ducal title and is granted the style “His Royal Highness”. He is now known as HRH Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland. He also has his own coat-of-arms and monogram. When Victoria assumes the throne and becomes Queen, Daniel will not become King, but assume a supportive role, similar to that of Prince Phillip, the husband of the United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II.

CanadaVOTES: NDP candidate Don Davies running in Vancouver Kingsway

Friday, September 26, 2008

On October 14, 2008, Canadians will be heading to the polls for the federal election. New Democratic Party candidate Don Davies is standing for election in the riding of Vancouver Kingsway.

A lawyer, he has spent the last 25 years fighting for human rights. A two-time student government representative, Davies was involved in the anti-apartheid, third world and peace movements. Admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1989, Davies and family moved to Vancouver in 1991, where he became the Director of Legal Resources for Teamsters Canada (Local 31), the next year. He is a long-time volunteer for children’s charity Variety, is Chair of the Parent Advisory Council at Mount Pleasant school, and a Director of the Meridian Cultural Society, among other things.

Wikinews contacted Don Davies, to talk about the issues facing Canadians, and what they and their party would do to address them. Wikinews is in the process of contacting every candidate, in every riding across the country, no matter their political stripe. All interviews are conducted over e-mail, and interviews are published unedited, allowing candidates to impart their full message to our readers, uninterrupted.

The riding is vacant, after Conservative Minister of International Trade David Emerson’s resignation. Emerson was elected in 2004 as a Liberal, serving as the Minister of Industry. Two weeks after re-election in 2006, he crossed the floor to join then-new Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who had won a minority government. Emerson was the first MP in Canadian history to cross the floor before a new government was sworn in. He has stepped down, after pressure from other parties.

Besides Davies, major party candidates include Liberal Wendy Yuan, Conservative Salomon Rayek, and Green Doug Warkentin. Also putting their hat in the ring are Matt Kadioglu (Libertarian), Kimball Cariou (Communist), and Donna Peterson (Marxist-Leninist).

For more information, visit the campaign’s official website, listed below.

This Saturday at 11 am, Davies will host NDP leader Jack Layton in the Commodore Ballroom at “rally4change”.

Moving The Kids From Bunk Beds To Captains Beds

By Ben Weissman

Are your kids ready for larger beds? Is it time to give up the bunk beds and to move on to captain’s beds? Many kids need to make this move for one reason or the other, but some will fight it. Some children love the bunk bed because it is high off the ground. Others enjoy the captains bed because it offers more storage and functionality. Moving children from one style of bedroom furniture to another can be difficult, but there are a few things you can do to minimize the risks and make the transition effective.

Make Them Part of the Decision

One of the ways that you can minimize the tension when switching bed types is to allow your children to help you to make those decisions. Allow them to offer an opinion on the style of bed they like. Some may prefer a bookcase headboard while others may want extra open storage for their skateboard and other gear. The child may prefer a different color or material, too. By allowing them to offer an opinion of what they like, you are more likely to ensure they will enjoy the bed in the months to come.

Dress It Up

When buying new bedroom sets, whether it is bunk beds or captain beds, you can make a big difference in the way your children react to it if you purchase new bedding for it. Choose their favorite cartoon character or colors. Get new pillows and a new mattress if it is necessary to do so. This helps your child to feel more at home and more welcomed in the new space. It is also a great way to dress up the room.

Keep Something Old

On the flip side, many children want to feel at home. Their bed, while it may only be a small part of their lives, is supposed to feel comfortable. This is especially true for younger children who may have a special stuffed animal they are sleeping with. For older kids, switching to a new bedroom style can help them to move away from those childish styles and furnishings but for others, allowing small items like a night light or a stuffed animal to join them in their new bed will helop them to feel more at home.

Buy Quality

Take the time to check out a range of bedroom options, too. Buying cheap bedroom furniture will not last and it may cost you more since you will need to replace it after a few years. Buy quality and your children will appreciate it for years to come.

For those who are looking for a way to update their child’s bedroom furniture, it is always a good idea to start looking at your options on the web. Captain’s beds are a great investment because they offer ample storage, excellent features and comfort to your growing child. It may be time for an upgrade of the children’s bedroom furniture and that means taking the time to include them in the decision making process.
