Russian territory expands by 4.5 square kilometres after seismic activity

Saturday, November 14, 2009

According to scientists, the land territory of Russia has expanded by about 4.5 square kilometres within the last few years in the Far East due to seismic and volcanic activity.

The gained land was recorded in the Sakhalin Peninsula. Boris Levin, head of the Institute for Sea Geology and Geophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that the increase happened primarily due to two seismic events.

The first, in August of 2007, was when a heavy 6.8 earthquake near the city of Nevelsk in the Far East raised about three square kilometres of seabed above the level of the water. The second was in June of this year, when the Sarychev Peak volcano on the Matua Island erupted. GPS trackers on the Matua island were used to monitor the eruption, and the volcano changed its shape, adding 1.5 square kilometres of land, scientists said.

Geologists also reported that the Kuril Islands nearby were slowly moving towards mainland Russia at an estimated rate of eighteen milimetres per year.

2006 U.S. Congressional Elections

Wednesday, November 8, 2006

As of 10:00 p.m EST November 8, 2006, the Democratic Party is projected to have gained control of both the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate in the 2006 United States general elections. MSNBC projects that the Democrats now control 234 seats in the House of Representatives, 16 more seats than the 218 needed to control the House of Representatives as all 435 seats were up for election. In the Senate, where the balance of power is closer, one-third of all seats were up for grab. As of 10:00 p.m. EST, AP and Reuters were projecting that the Democrats had picked up all six seats they needed to retake the Senate, including the seats of incumbents Rick Santorum (Penn.), Lincoln Chafee (R.I.), Jim Talent (Missouri), Mike DeWine (Ohio), John Tester (Montana), and Jim Webb (VA). The Tester victory by less than 3,000 votes was projected at approximately 2 p.m. EST after the State of Montana announced the results of overnight recounts. Democrat Jim Webb has prevailed in that race by slightly more than 7,000 votes, though his opponent has not conceded and a recount may still occur.

Charles Manson releases album under free license

Sunday, April 6, 2008

Convicted cult leader and murderer Charles Manson has released his album One Mind under a free content license. The album was already released on April 7, 2005, but now it has become available under the Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share-Alike 2.0 License. This means that anyone can remix and share the album for non-commercial purposes, as long as they give proper credit and use the same license.

The website Family Jams (Manson’s record label), which offers hard-copies of the CD, says that “ONE MIND is pure Charlie, no additions, no corrections, no added opinions, filters or editing… consisting of songs, trance-poetry, conversations, raps, ramblings, musings and more.” The cover-art is a painting by Manson, liner notes include excerpts from his letters, and, as the sites mentions, song titles and interludes are by friends or editors.

The disc has 16 tracks, totalling almost 76 minutes of Manson’s work. The CD can be bought on the Family Jams site for $15.00 in the U.S. and Canada, and for $17.50 in other countries. Because of the new license, the tracks can be legally downloaded, and samples can be used for derived works.

Manson was part of the Los Angeles music scene before his conviction as leader of the Manson Family commune. He was close to Beach Boy Dennis Wilson —Manson wrote the song ‘Never Learn Not to Love‘ for the Beach Boys.

In 1970, Manson released the album Lie: The Love & Terror Cult to finance his trial. The Manson Family also released The Family Jams, with songs written by Manson. Manson has released several albums since.

Groups such as Nine Inch Nails have previously released some of their work under a free license.

In a related story, Lindsay Lohan will play Nancy Pitman in an upcoming movie called Manson Girls. Lohan has previously revealed that she was fascinated by Manson during her “dark period” before she sought help for drug and alcohol addiction in 2007: “Yeah, I have a dark side. I watched all those videos on Charles Manson for a while.” Lohan also stars in the movie Chapter 27 about John Lennon‘s assassination.

United States: Coroner says former patient killed self and three hostages at California veterans center

Saturday, March 17, 2018

In the United States, autopsy results were released on Thursday by the Napa County Sheriff’s Office, which show that Albert Wong killed himself after shooting his three hostages at The Pathway Home veterans’ psychiatric center in Yountville, California last Friday. The hostages died instantly from rifle shots to the head, and Wong shot himself in the head with a shotgun. Officials said there was no indication any of the four was killed by a sheriff’s deputy who exchanged shots with Wong.

The Sheriff of Napa County also acts as the county coroner. According to the official report, the three hostages “all suffered immediately fatal head wounds caused by a high velocity projectile consistent with the rifle that the shooter, Albert Wong, used in this incident”. Wong’s fatal head wound was self-inflicted. Sheriff’s Captain Steven Blower clarified that neither Wong nor the hostages was shot by the deputy.

According to authorities, Wong, a former Pathway resident, drove a rented car to the center Friday, March 9, and shortly after 10 AM local time (UTC-8), dressed in black and armed with a semi-automatic rifle, took five of the people at a leaving party hostage. The first call to the emergency 9-1-1 number was made at about 10:20. About ten minutes later, shots were heard, and a sheriff’s deputy and Wong exchanged fire. Wong then shut himself in a room with three of the hostages. The campus was evacuated, but there was no further contact with Wong. A little before 6 PM, a video feed from a remote-controlled robot showed the four people in the room were probably dead.

The three victims were all women. Christine Loeber, 48, was the executive director of the home. Jen Golick, 42, was its clinical director. Jennifer Gonzales Shushereba, 36, was a psychologist on the staff of the San Francisco Department of Veterans Affairs Healthcare System and also worked with PsychArmor, a nonprofit group, to create a toolkit for college campuses to assist students with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She was entering her last trimester of pregnancy.

Wong, 36, was a decorated veteran who served in the infantry in Afghanistan for a year in 2011–2012. He had been in treatment at the center for about a year but had been expelled two weeks before the hostage-taking because knives were found in his possession. His brother Tyrone Lampkin told The Press Democrat, Wong had been angry and said he “wanted to get back at them”, but what he had mentioned was to “talk to them, yell at them, not to kill them”.

The Board of Directors of The Pathway Home announced on Wednesday that it would suspend operations “indefinitely”. It is a ten-year-old non-profit in-patient center treating veterans with PTSD, brain injuries, depression and addictions on the campus of the Veterans Home of California Yountville. Yountville is a small town in the wine country a little more than 50 miles north of San Francisco. Founded as a last-resort center for intensive treatment of veterans who had not been helped by other approaches, it transitioned in 2015 to providing care to those not yet in crisis, including veterans studying at Napa Community College. The Veterans Home is the largest in the United States, with more than 900 residents.

Honda CBR1000R Road Test Review

by

Mohammed McNaughton

Italian influence on the design of the CB1000R is obvious as soon as you clap eyes on it. Easily one of the most stylish ‘Japanese’ bikes out there, its highly attractive sharpness stretches from its triangular wasp head-aping headlight cowl all the way through to the deliciously thin tail piece. Along with a single-sided swingarm and long angular exhaust heat shield, the Honda is one very up-to-date looking machine. If you’re looking to draw admiring glances, then this is a very good choice of bike.

The association it has had with our Latin friends is less obvious when you ride the Honda, and at first that’s good news. It’s generally easier to live with than the majority of Italian machinery, with key differences like the comfortable riding position, plush suspension and decent steering lock being just three of several issues making it more amenable. Typically, being a Honda there’s a certain amount of excessive refinement that does its best to reduce the CB’s character, and at times that can distance your relationship with it – which is very un-Italian. But there’s no doubting the effect and thoroughness of the 1000’s design and balance, which makes it suitable for a wide range of riders to tackle an equally wide range of duties. Central to making it acceptable to the masses is the brilliant engine. Using a 2007-spec Fireblade engine as a base, with different internals, cylinder head, throttle bodies and ECU give it a really flexible and friendly character. The gutsy motor produces power from very low down the rev range, allowing it to pull bigger gears with ease. As soon as the wheels are rolling you can short-shift up through the gears to top and not need to change back down too often. It helps to give the bike a very relaxed and unhurried feel overall. The flexibility and dependence on the engine to promptly produce the goods make it a real ally, and any decisions on gaining speed can be made without delay. The knowledge of that level of obedience being in place makes riding all the more acceptable and less intense in any environment. Being very smooth and having almost perfect fuelling assists the civility of it all further still. The digital rev counter might be tricky to read, but its information is largely academic anyway such is the rapid pick up at any engine speed. Honda CB1000RIf you do want to get more involved, and stir the gearbox more to rev the in-line four higher, then the 1000 is just as willing to respond. However such is the strength of its power, you’re only advised to do that in the right place and right time. The CB1000R is a very potent motorcycle and not far short of being fairly labeled as a naked sportsbike. The absence of any bodywork increases the sensation of speed, and up to a point that’s a plus factor. As long as the pace isn’t high for too long, then being more ‘out there’ amongst the environment feels really thrilling. Compared to some faired bikes that isolate you more from this, and mask the speed you’re travelling at, the experience feels really fulfilling. The problems occur when you need to sustain a higher level of progress and the effects of the wind become a lot harder to bear. Long periods of motorway use start to strain the neck and upper body generally and reduce the pleasure of the ride. The protection from the clocks and nose cone is better than you’d expect, but the CB isn’t a bike best-suited to this sort of work. Honda CB1000RWith the sort of rewards you get from riding more winding routes there’s even more reason to avoid the straight-line monotony anyway. Show the Honda a corner-laden road and it’ll impress you with its numerous virtues. Biggest one arguably is the overall poise and balance of the bike. Not a featherweight at a claimed 222kilos wet, the 1000 is nevertheless still very easy to manage. The distribution of its mass is good. And thanks to the leverage from its tall wide bars, making the bike turn doesn’t require high levels of physical persuasion. It steers nicely and accurately, and the suspension fends off the potential ill-effects of rougher sections of Tarmac. With the exception of no compression damping adjustment on the rear shock, both ends of the bike can be fully altered to suit conditions and personal tastes. But given the balance of control and comfort provided by the Showa equipment I personally wouldn’t have been bothered if it featured none at all. My test over a variety of roads, at different speeds and in different conditions didn’t really ever warrant making any changes. In fact I’d say the quality of the suspension is one of the CB1000R’s very best features. Competing closely with that though and definitely benefitting from the wheel control the forks and shock provide are the very impressive brakes. Not everyone is a fan of linked systems, but my view is as long as you spend time learning how much you can use the ‘rear’ brake pedal to take advantage of all of the stopping power it offers the front calipers, then you’ll be fine. Better still is the fact that some novices, who tend to shy away from using the lever at the handlebar, will have their braking efforts managed better for them rather than just locking up the rear wheel and possibly sliding into trouble. Whoever you are, the Honda’s CBS/ABS arrangement can always be relied on to give lots of powerful and progressive retardation. Combined with the un-intrusive nature of the anti-lock feature, grippy tyres and compliant suspension you’d have to be unfortunate to have any brake-related moments. So sorted is the CB, that at the end of this, my third test of it, I found there’s actually little to be critical of. Some of shorter leg may not warm to it. The seat height may not sound too tall at 825mm. But even so, my 32′ inside leg wasn’t sufficient to get both my Alpinestars boots flat on terra firma. It wasn’t off-putting for me, but I wonder if it might concern those newer to bigger bikes. What could be of more concern is the 1000’s lack of character. Thanks to it being a little too smooth and refined in the way it goes about its duties, it’s a little less endearing than something that offers a bit more of a challenge. Honda may have commissioned the Italians to design and build the bike – and in many ways that’s clear to see, but they seem to have prevented the Latins including some of the typical personality found in the vast majority of their bikes. The issue didn’t bother me so much in this test (against another Honda that might not be such a surprise), but I do remember it being a lot more apparent when I recently pitched it against some other European bikes. But whatever your view on the CB1000R’s level of charisma, the fact that it’s a very stylish, effective high performance streetbike is far less open for debate. Sunday school teacher arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and murder

Sunday, April 12, 2009

Sunday school teacher Melissa Huckaby, of Tracy, California, was arrested just before midnight Friday night on suspicion of kidnapping and killing an 8-year-old girl.

Tracy Police Chief Janet Thiessen said, “Ms. Huckaby has been arrested and will be booked at the San Joaquin County Jail for kidnapping and murder.” Tracy Police Police Sargent Tony Sheneman added, “She revealed enough information that we had probable cause to arrest her for both kidnapping and murder.”

Huckaby voluntarily submitted herself to questioning Friday night at the Tracy police station, and was arrested less than six hours later. She now resides in the San Joaquin County Jail without bond, awaiting an arraignment hearing on Tuesday.

On April 6, the body of Sandra Cantu was discovered stuffed inside the 28-year-old’s suitcase at the bottom of a pond a few miles away from her home. The two were neighbors in the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park and Huckaby’s own 5-year-old daughter often played with Cantu. Autopsy results are still pending.

Huckaby admitted in a published interview that Cantu had visited her home on the day the girl went missing. She also said that her suitcase was stolen in her driveway before the April 6 discovery. However, police say Huckaby gave four different accounts of what happened the day before Cantu went missing to four different sources.

Huckaby was due in court on April 17 to check in with officials at a mental health program in the county. This treatment was ordered as a part of her 3-year probation sentence for a prior petty theft charge in November 2006.

No word on a possible motive in this case. Tracy Police Sargent Tony Sheneman said, “I couldn’t even begin to theorize what her motive is.”

There are no other suspects in the case and Sheneman does not expect any further arrests.

Cristiano Ronaldo crashes Ferrari at Manchester Airport

Sunday, January 11, 2009

Portuguese football player Cristiano Ronaldo has been involved in a car crash in Manchester, in the United Kingdom.

The Manchester United winger who also plays internationally for Portugal crashed his Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano at 10:20 a.m. on Friday January 9. The car, worth approximately £200,000 ($305,000) was totally destroyed. A wheel came off the car and debris was placed all over the road. Ronaldo was not injured during the crash and no other vehicles were involved. Team mate, Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was said to be following behind Ronaldo.

Ronaldo turned up for training later in the day. He has been with Manchester United since 2003 and scored 74 goals in 178 games. He has also scored 21 goals for Portugal and has competed for them in Euro 2004 and 2008 as well as the 2006 FIFA World Cup and 2004 Summer Olympics. He returned to the training ground in his £150,000 Bentley.

The Role Of Urgent Care Services

byAlma Abell

No one plans on having an emergency or an accident. However, when such an unfortunate occurrence takes place, one needs to know where to go to get help quickly. Recent decades have seen a boom in free-standing urgent care clinics. Gone are the days of having to spend hours in a hospital emergency room for an injury or condition that could be handled on an outpatient basis. This includes cases such as flu, a cut requiring stitches and possibly a tetanus shot, or a minor work-related injury. Urgent care facilities have also become a substitute for some primary care needs as well, covering such services as employer-mandated drug screening, flu shots, allergy shots, work and school physicals, and even preventive health care.

North American Emergency Medical Center provides these kinds of Urgent Care Services. This facility, and facilities like it are prepared for walk-in emergencies and other services. Urgent care centers are staffed by competent medical personnel and should be certified by JACHO, their umbrella organization. Many urgent cares are also offshoots of established full-service hospitals and as such have access to the services of doctors, nurses and technicians employed by the hospital as well as laboratory services and radiology reading. A motto of an urgent care service facility may be “get in, get out, get better,” as it is at NAEMC. The usually keep flexible hours, open longer every day than, for example, a family medical practice. The physicians are trained as emergency physicians, which means that they can handle a wide variety of circumstances and deal with all comers. Care specialists like this thrive on dealing with anything that comes their way.

In addition to Urgent Care Services and immediate care, many facilities have expanded their operations to include preventative healthcare, pain management, sports medicine, and other services usually not considered to be of an emergent type. Most clinics accept patients on a walk-in basis, so there is no long wait time for an appointment. Additionally, many facilities accept a broad range of insurance coverage, although some keep costs down by operating on a “cash and carry” basis only. Ask around amongst neighbors, friends and family to see where they go for emergency care; not all centers are created equal, and it is important to receive appropriate professional care. A caring and compassionate staff and highly trained professional care providers are the keys to a good urgent or emergency care center.

Asbestos controversy aboard Scientology ship Freewinds

Friday, May 16, 2008

Controversy has arisen over the reported presence of blue asbestos on the MV Freewinds, a cruise ship owned by the Church of Scientology. According to the Saint Martin newspaper The Daily Herald and the shipping news journal Lloyd’s List, the Freewinds was sealed in April and local public health officials on the Caribbean island of Curaçao where the ship is docked began an investigation into the presence of asbestos dust on the ship. Former Scientologist Lawrence Woodcraft supervised work on the ship in 1987, and attested to the presence of blue asbestos on the Freewinds in an affidavit posted to the Internet in 2001. Woodcraft, a licensed architect by profession, gave a statement to Wikinews and commented on the recent events.

According to The Daily Herald, the Freewinds was in the process of being renovated by the Curaçao Drydock Company. The article states that samples taken from paneling in the ship were sent to the Netherlands, where an analysis revealed that they “contained significant levels of blue asbestos”. An employee of the Curaçao Drydock Company told Radar Online in an April 30 article that the Freewinds has been docked and sealed, and confirmed that an article about asbestos ran in the local paper.

Lloyd’s List reported that work on the interior of the Freewinds was suspended on April 27 after health inspectors found traces of blue asbestos on the ship. According to Lloyd’s List, Frank Esser, Curaçao Drydock Company’s interim director, joined Curaçao’s head of the department of labor affairs Christiene van der Biezen along with the head of the local health department Tico Ras and two inspectors in an April 25 inspection of the ship. “We are sending someone so that they can tell us what happened, where it came from, since when it has been there,” said Panama Maritime Authority’s director of merchant marine Alfonso Castillero in a statement to Lloyd’s List.

The Church of Scientology purchased the ship, then known as the Bohème, in 1987, through an organization called Flag Ship Trust. After being renovated and refitted, it was put into service in June 1988. The ship is used by the Church of Scientology for advanced Scientology training in “Operating Thetan” levels, as well as for spiritual retreats for its members. Curaçao has been the ship’s homeport since it was purchased by the Church of Scientology.

According to his 2001 statement, Lawrence Woodcraft had been an architect in London, England since 1975, and joined Scientology’s elite “Sea Organization” (Sea Org) in 1986. He wrote that he was asked by the Sea Org to work on the Freewinds in 1987, and during his work on the ship “noticed a powdery blue fibrous substance approximately 1 ½” thick between the paint and the steel wall,” which he believed to be asbestos. He also discovered what he thought was blue asbestos in other parts of the ship, and reported his findings to Church of Scientology executives. Woodcraft discussed his experiences in a 2001 interview published online by the Lisa McPherson Trust, a now-defunct organization which was critical of the Church of Scientology.

The Freewinds regularly inspects the air quality on board and always meets or exceeds US standards.

Church of Scientology spokeswoman Karin Pouw responded to Radar Online about the asbestos reports, in an email published in an article in Radar on May 1. “The Freewinds regularly inspects the air quality on board and always meets or exceeds US standards,” said Pouw. She stated that two inspections performed in April “confirmed that the air quality is safe,” and asserted that the inspections revealed the Freewinds satisfies standards set by the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the U.S. Clean Air Act.

Pouw told Radar that “The Freewinds will be completing its refit on schedule.” The Church of Scientology-affiliated organization Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) had been planning a cruise aboard the Freewinds scheduled for May 8, but according to Radar an individual who called the booking number for the cruise received a message that the cruise had been delayed due to ongoing work on the ship. Citing an article in the Netherlands Antilles newspaper Amigoe, Radar reported on May 6 that a team from the United States and supervised by an independent bureau from the Netherlands traveled to Curaçao in order to remove asbestos from the Freewinds.

…if the Church of Scientology claims to have removed the blue asbestos, I just don’t see how, it’s everywhere. You would first have to remove all the pipes, plumbing, a/c ducts, electrical wiring etc. etc. just a maze of stuff.

“I stand by everything I wrote in my 2001 affidavit,” said Lawrence Woodcraft in an exclusive statement given to Wikinews. Woodcraft went on to state: “I would also comment that if the Church of Scientology claims to have removed the blue asbestos, I just don’t see how, it’s everywhere. You would first have to remove all the pipes, plumbing, a/c ducts, electrical wiring etc. etc. just a maze of stuff. Also panelling as well, basically strip the ship back to a steel hull. Also blue asbestos is sprayed onto the outer walls and then covered in paint. It’s in every nook and cranny.”

Many Scientologist celebrities have spent time aboard the Freewinds, including Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, John Travolta, Kelly Preston, Chick Corea, Lisa Marie Presley, Catherine Bell, Kate Ceberano, and Juliette Lewis. Now magazine reported that Tom Cruise has been urged to seek medical attention regarding potential asbestos exposure, however a representative for Cruise stated he has “absolutely no knowledge” of the recent asbestos controversy. Cruise, Holmes, Travolta and Preston have celebrated birthdays and other events on the Freewinds.

There is not now and never has been a situation of asbestos exposure on the Freewinds.

In a May 15 statement to the United Kingdom daily newspaper Metro, a representative for the Church of Scientology said that “There is not now and never has been a situation of asbestos exposure on the Freewinds.” The Asbestos and Mesothelioma Center notes that agencies have recommended anyone who has spent time on the Freewinds consult with their physician to determine if possible asbestos exposure may have affected their health.

Raw blue asbestos is the most hazardous form of asbestos, and has been banned in the United Kingdom since 1970. Blue asbestos fibers are very narrow and thus easily inhaled, and are a major cause of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a form of cancer which can develop in the lining of the lungs and chest cavity, the lining of the abdominal cavity, or the pericardium sac surrounding the heart. The cancer is incurable, and can manifest over 40 years after the initial exposure to asbestos.

“This is the most dangerous type of asbestos because the fibres are smaller than the white asbestos and can penetrate the lung more easily,” said toxicologist Dr. Chris Coggins in a statement published in OK! Magazine. Dr. Coggins went on to note that “Once diagnosed with mesothelioma, the victim has six months to a year to live. It gradually reduces lung function until the victim is no longer able to breathe and dies.”
