Utah Man pleads guilty in wife’s death

Saturday, April 16, 2005

Salt Lake City (Utah) resident and hospital orderly Mark Hacking pleaded guilty Friday to killing his wife Lori, and placing her body in a dumpster.

Mrs. Hacking’s disappearance last summer touched off an intense, weeklong search in Salt Lake County which a wire service report said was similar to the other sensational Salt Lake crime, the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart from her own bedroom.

After Hacking admitted details of his crime to his family, earlier, he suffered a breakdown and was placed in a psychiatric hospital. He was seen in court Friday with his hands cuffed behind his back.

He admitted to the judge that he killed his wife while she slept. His motives, according to prosecutors, were his anger and despondency when she discovered that he was not accepted into a North Carolina medical school as he had claimed, but would remain a hospital orderly.

Mrs. Hacking is reported to have broken down sobbing at her workplace, a Wells Fargo brokerage, after discovering her husband’s deception. She had placed a call to the medical school’s administrators and been told he was not enrolled. He had lied to her about graduating from the University of Utah as well.

Mrs. Hacking’s mother and father were in the courtroom to hear their son-in-law declare: “I intentionally shot Lori Hacking in the head with a .22 rifle.” They said it was like a “knife in the heart” to hear that, but were happy he owned up to the crime.

The attack occurred last July. Volunteers scouring a landfill found her decomposed remains after three months of searching.

How To Live In One Of The Most Expensive Cities In The World For Less Than 1000 A Month?

How to Live in One of The Most Expensive Cities in The World For Less Than 1000 a Month? by Nazir HussainOption 1. Tow a luxury caravan behind a vehicle to use for your living accommodation and keep moving from location to location in the city. Option 2. Have your home fitted to your own specification by a top of the range couch builder with all the mod cons to your hearts content. Then park it either permanently or semi-permanently , you simply rent a small plot of land either in the city or in one of the suburbs just outside the main city.Option 3. Since River Thames runs through the heart of the London city, you can buy yourself a small boat for three people, a luxury one for more people or go for the long river boat with a lot of living space. In this article, we discuss this option in detail, its merits and benefits:-1)First of all you need a boat and there is a huge number and sizes to choose from. Consider this scenario and the savings. The Cheyne Walk home has very prestigious address as well as a good view of the embankment but the asking price is 6.5 million. If you opt for the house boat instead, you will have acquired for yourself virtually the same prestigious address and a saving of 6.5 millions or near that point”.What sort of boat do I need? Here is an example of a house boat moored in Chelsea with mooring rights till 2020 at the rate of 9,000 per year or 750 per month. This is very cheap when you compare this cost to rents of 500 per week being charged in the same area for traditional home living. The most common house boat is the narrow one; it stretches 45 to 50ft in length and about 6 feet in width. There is ample living space for a couple and occasional guests. You can buy a brand new narrow boat for about 90,000 but used ones are available for about 25,000 to 30,000.Buying a house boat is no different than buying car or a home. You need to have your future possession/home checked out properly for value and major defects if any. It is recommended that you have a detailed survey carried followed by a thorough safety inspection. The safety inspection is an absolute must.2)Mooring costs? Mooring costs range between 4,000 and 8,000 per year. These costs very much depend on the location where your boat is moored. The due diligence in respect of mooring rights is important, advised and is highly recommended. Visit the potential mooring site and ask questions of the existing river boat residents. River people are a very close knit community and will help you in your decision making process. Ask them all the questions which you feel need answering. For example, you want to make sure that you can stay there for as long as you want. Therefore, having a 25 year lease will give you the security and the peace of mind. It is advised for you to check that your mooring rights are not for a short period. And, if you are taking over a lease which has a tenure of 3 years still to run, you want to make sure that you have the option to renew it in its present state without any alterations to any of the existing covenants. 3)Are there any additional costs to take into account? You are treated no different than a ordinary resident so far as the local government taxation is concerned. For London, the council tax is between 900 to 1,200 per year. The river licence will add another 1,000 per year to your cost of living. Insurance costs in respect of your possessions and the boat itself amount to 800 per year. There are maintenance costs of around 4,000 every 4 years. So, set aside a 1,000 per year to pay for these essential costs when the time comes to avoid unpleasant surprises. Finally, this is flexible living indeed because you can move to another place up or down the river. Buying a boat and then paying for everything else does amount to a lot of money it would appear. But, these costs are much less than you would have to pay if you were to buy a house in London. Can I get a mortgage to buy a boat? There are lenders willing to lend although it is a much more risky proposal and therefore attracts a slightly higher interest rate. The point of the exercise is that for about 1,000 a month, you can be living in the heart of the London city where other people are paying a whopping 1,000 per week.Invest in a river boat & live life to the full. Fidel Castro temporarily hands power to his brother Raul

Tuesday, August 1, 2006

President Fidel Castro of Cuba has temporarily handed duties, including command of the military forces, to his brother, Raúl Castro. Fidel Castro is undergoing intestinal surgery for gastrointestinal bleeding, and is temporarily unable to govern. 75-year-old Raúl Castro has been the Vice-President of Cuba and number two in the Communist Party of Cuba. Fidel Castro is 79 years old and has ruled since the 1959 revolution.

The power change was reported on Cuban television Monday night by Carlos Balenciago, Castro’s secretary. According to the letter of Castro’s that he read, the reason for the operation was stress and the President of Cuba will need to spend several weeks in bed.

Over 70% of Cuba’s population was born after Castro’s rise to power, who has served as president ever since. It is unknown how the population will react to such an unexpected change. However, a recently signed White House bill has allocated $30 million US dollars for the transition to a new Cuban regime in the case of just such an event.

Dove’s Real Beauty looks at photoshoot techniques in commercial

Thursday, October 12, 2006

Dove soaps continues their North American “Campaign for Real Beauty” advertising with a television commercial that explores the alterations that can be done on models.

Labeled “a Dove film”, the commercial is entitled “evolution”. Beginning with a woman walking into a photo shoot. From there, she is primped and plucked by hair and makeup artists, then tweaked on a Photoshop-like program.

The photo-manipulation is then posted on a billboard for the fictional “Easel Foundation Makeup” brand. Two young, teenage girls walk past, glancing at the board.

“No wonder our perception of beauty is distorted” ends the ad in text, “Every girl deserves to feel beautiful just the way she is.”

Dove runs the Dove Self-Esteem Fund as a part of their Campaign for Real Beauty. In the marketing campaign, Dove uses “real” women, instead of professional models, in an attempt to instill self-esteem in their customers.

This continuing promotion, launched in 2004, was on the forefront of a current trend in Western culture to abandon the overly idealised images the media portrays of women. Recently some fashion capitals have mandated minimum body mass indexes for runway models. The top rated comedy in the United States and Canada is Ugly Betty, a series that stars an average girl coping at a fashion magazine. The series is based on Betty la Fea, an extremely popular Colombian telenovela, which has been reproduced internationally.

Only two percent of women surveyed worldwide consider themselves beautiful, according to ABC Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts, whose program debuted the commercial this morning at 8:07 am EST.

The ad is currently playing on the Campaign for Real Beauty’s homepage.

Anti Wrinkle Injections? Restylane Or Juvederm

By Rena Graham

Sometimes we get frustrated because no matter how many creams we slather on our faces, we still end up with less than youthful results. Sometimes the waiting game can take so long that sometimes we lose faith on whether all these regimen is really working. Which is why it comes to no surprise why some people look for faster and also effective ways to defy aging, therefore we welcome anti-wrinkle injections.

Anti-wrinkle injections are not new to everyone. We all know about it from celebrities who use it, to ordinary individuals who want to erase those unattractive and unflattering wrinkles. Being around for quite a while, you are now already presented with a number of options. Let us go through each of them to help you get an idea on which one would be right for you.

As famous as the people who use them, Botox is one of the most often used anti-wrinkle injection. It comes from the purified form of the Botulinum toxin which paralyzes the nerves on your face, relaxing the muscles that are causing the wrinkles. From forehead wrinkles, jowl lines to laugh lines or crow’s feet, it can smoothen out wrinkles. You can have this within a few minutes time, with results starting to show within 2-3 days time. Side effects include marked drooping of the eyelids or what is called ptosis, allergic reactions or redness on the injection site. The effects of Botox can last for up to 3-4 months time and sometimes even more. So if you want to maintain your youthful look, you can always go back to have it touched up.

Hylaform injections are hyaluronic injection fillers and are great in improving the lip and cheek area. It is derived from animal sources therefore it has some risks for allergic reactions. Once injected it binds in with water as it incorporates itself into your dermis. With this action, hylaform injections are able to provide immediate results, although with some redness and bruising at first. The results usually lasts up to three months time.

Another hyaluronic acid filler is Restylane which has the same action as Botox, although they differ in material since it is made from the streptococcus bacteria. It is able to erase those frown lines, hollowed eyes, crow’s feet and it even plumps the lips. It is non-animal based and within 2-3 days time, you can already observe the effects and can last for up to 12 months at most.

Juvederm injection is another hyaluronic acid injection that is used to particularly treat moderate wrinkles. It is one of the newest form of antiwrinkle injection in the market with its FDA approval received in 2006. As mentioned earlier, hyaluronic acid binds with water therefore it helps plump up the skin and smoothes those wrinkles and folds. Side effects are only minor with redness and bruising on the area, and some degree of swelling as well. It is also reported that the results of Juvederm can last for up to 9-12 months.

Wikinews interviews 2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor Candidate Wayne Tseng

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

Australian art gallery raided by police; photographer faces possible indecency charge

Monday, May 26, 2008

The Rosley Oxley9 Gallery in Sydney, Australia was raided by police over the weekend following complaints of child pornography. The complaints related to an exhibition of works by photographer Bill Henson, which included several photographs of naked pubescent children. Twenty-one of the forty photographs in the exhibition were seized during the raid, and police have announced that charges will be laid under the NSW Commonwealth and Crimes Act for “publishing an indecent article”. Digital versions have also been removed from the Gallery’s website.

Whatever the artistic view of the merits of that sort of stuff – frankly I don’t think there are any – just allow kids to be kids.

Politicians on both sides of the fence spoke out against the exhibition. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, speaking to the Nine Network, said he found the photos to be “absolutely revolting […] Whatever the artistic view of the merits of that sort of stuff – frankly I don’t think there are any – just allow kids to be kids.” His Opposition counterpart, Brendan Nelson, believes that the exhibition “violates the things for which we stand as Australians and indeed as parents”.

Art experts have supported Henson and defended his work, denying claims of child pornography and exploitation. According to Betty Churcher, a former director of the National Gallery of Australia, “[t]here is absolutely no suggestion of pornography in these photographs”. Sydney art dealer Denis Savill hung one of Henson’s works, featuring two nudes, in his gallery window beside an Arthur Boyd nude, to “give them something to grizzle about”.

According to Tony Oxley, husband of gallery owner Roslyn, the gallery’s answering machine has recorded several threats to burn the building down. The police action also calls into question the fate of similar works by Henson in other galleries in Australia and around the world.
